It's Okay to Press the Pause Button: Being Laid Off Is Hard Work
Oct 07, 2024There have been a lot of people impacted this year through layoffs. Even in the best case scenario where you knew it was coming and you received a severance package that will provide you some breathing room, it can feel like a vice grip of stress not knowing what the future holds.
But many didn't see it coming and didn't receive a severance package that will sustain them for very long or any severance package at all. Even if this is the case, it's okay to press the pause button and breathe. It may not feel like you can, but you can. It may feel like unless you're constantly doing something you're going to miss an opportunity.
Or maybe you're frozen. You wake up and your mind is buzzing but you can't seem to take any action. These are all natural reactions. But no matter what you're situation, you have time to pause and breathe. Give yourself that.
ā²ļø We recommend you commit to how you will spend your time. If you're going to take some time to collect yourself, then commit to that time. Pick a date you'll start focusing on building a new chapter.
šļø Once you've picked a date and started on the journey of carving out the next chapter in your career, stick to a schedule. This is you tending to your building your business and finding the next 'client' or 'clients.'
ā±ļø After you've completed the time you scheduled to work on the business of building your career, clock out. Seriously. Clock out! Take a stroll. Get some sunshine. Play with your kids or pets. Do something that brings you joy. This isn't a nice to have. It's a need to have. You have to refuel for the journey.
š Reach out to someone who can support you. This can be a family member, friend, former colleague or professional. The business of career building is not a solo act. You're not the only one who has or is experiencing this. Sometimes the situation may be stressful for your family and they may not have the capacity to sit in the uncertainty of it all with you. Find that person that can.
Know that this too shall pass. So breathe. Pause. Be kind to yourself.
